The Beauty of Being a Woman?

Listening to Pandora Radio while studying, I kept hearing the commercial for Faith Hill’s new fragrance. In the ad, she asserts that she can help its wearers “discover the beauty of being a woman.” After grumbling the first few times I heard it, I decided to take action. Here is the email I sent to their website:

In marketing and advertising, I know it’s impossible to please everyone (or even avoid offending at least a few), however,  I and a group of people I am close with are highly offended by the assertion that anyone , especially a singer/perfume, can “help someone discover the beauty of being a woman.” Beauty, and for that matter, being a woman, are highly subjective- what is true for one person may not (and likely isn’t) true for someone else.

Marketing aside, I think the slogan is highly offensive to those people who may have a different belief on what it means to be a woman or beautiful. Essentially, I think it makes a judgment that is quite the opposite of what Faith seems to be aiming for.

I hope you’ll keep this in mind and share it with your team.

Sincerely,
Mina

I wonder how others feel about the slogan and/or my response… is anyone else as peeved as me?

  1. The beauty I see in the mirror has nothing to do with the perfume I (dont) wear, the (not designer) clothes hanging off my body or the (simple) jewelry I wear. It has everything to do with the wrinkles I am beginning to adorn. My beauty is defined by my actions, by my history, by my decisions. I see my beauty being shaped every day by the choices I make, the stances I take, and the family I have chosen. To see my beauty I can look in the mirror, in the eyes of a friend, or to the proud face of my mother. For a stranger to see my beauty, all it takes is a conversation. A persons worth is not judged by what they are, but who they are.

  2. +1 from me! The list of people, celebrities especially that I’m aggravated with, is getting longer and longer.
